Job Description

Seaspan Marine is the owner/operator of the largest oil barges on the West Coast of Canada and bulk transporter of refined petroleum products, chemicals and bunker fuels. Our barges serve various oil majors, industries and defense facilities.

We are currently seeking full-time positions for Oil Barge Operators.

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Carry out safe loading/discharging of barges in compliance with various legislations.
  • Safely carry out other supportive activities in relation to safe loading/discharging of cargo such as hose/arm connection/disconnection, crane handling, tending of mooring and gangway etc.
  • Maintain the highest level of conduct and safety.
  • Maintain anti-pollution and security watches.
  • Report all deficiencies, near misses, hazards, and incidents to management.
  • Maintain product & cargo integrity (on-spec, without damage)
  • Maintain accurate records of the loading and offloading of cargo processes with respect to times, volumes, and systems.
  • Carry out key meetings with shore personnel, toolbox talks and other safety activities in compliance with company's requirements.
  • Carry out barge inspections as per company's requirements.
  • Participate in various inspections (OCIMF, Class, TC, USCG etc.) and surveys.
  • Send updates to various parties as per voyage orders.
  • Carry out bunkering of barges as and when instructed.
  • Carry out pre-transfer checks as required.
  • Report all equipment breakdowns and repairs required.
  • Participate in company provided training and HSEQ programs.

Qualification Requirements
  • Supervisor of Oil Transfer Operations (SOTO - C) issued by Transport Canada or Advance Tanker Endorsements issued by Transport Canada.
  • Marine Emergency Duties - STCW Basic Safety
  • Radio Operator Certificate (ROC-MC)
  • Marine Basic or Advanced First Aid
  • Transport Canada Marine Medical
  • Class 5 Driver's License
  • Required to have your own vehicle for driving to and from the local terminals.
  • Passport with no travel restrictions
  • Must have legal right to work in Canada.
  • VISA/ETA for travel to US ports for Non-Canadian Passport holders
  • Clear ICBC Driver's Abstract and Criminal Record Check (either from the Commissionaires or the RCMP)

Skills, Knowledge, and Required Competencies
  • Understanding of company operating procedures and policies and terminal guidelines.
  • Knowledge of barge cargo operations and mechanical systems
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other computer applications
  • Computer and analytical skills including the ability to convert units from different tables and documents, enter data into systems and applications.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work various hours and travel as required.
  • Planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
