Job Description

COMPANY OVERVIEW:

The Globe and Mail is a national icon and one of Canada's most recognized media brands. We proudly serve as a trusted destination for Canadians seeking the highest caliber of journalism, and we've garnered international acclaim for our data visualization, design, and creative storytelling.

We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity by reflecting all Canadians in both the stories that we tell and the composition of our workforce. We are proud partners with organizations like Indigenous Works, Pride at Work, the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, and we are a signatory of the BlackNorth Initiative. Recognizing the importance of work-life balance, we offer flexible work arrangements and support programs. We also invest in our employees' growth through training and mentorship opportunities, enabling you to expand your skills and embrace new challenges.

No matter your position at The Globe, you'll be an integral part of an organization dedicated to making a positive difference in Canada. Join us.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Globe Content Studio works with the country's top brands to tell award-winning stories that resonate with their target audiences. From podcasts to video, photo essays to immersive interactives, on- and off-platform, it aims to exceed client objectives.

Joining the content-marketing division of The Globe and Mail requires a passion for excellence and an unwavering commitment to innovating in a fast-paced, dynamically evolving industry. The team of content strategists, creatives and analysts are seeking an Interactive Designer who is a self-starter, able to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment, who also embraces being part of a close-knit working group.

This is a crucial creative anchor for Globe Content Studio, a hands-on role that includes design ideation for pitches and building custom assets post-sale, bringing stories to life on the digital page. Our aim is to be the premier content-marketing design shop in the country as we aim to sell consistently bigger, bolder, more ambitious work to our key clients.

Design is a differentiator for us in a highly competitive market. Successful candidates will collaborate closely with the Creative Lead, to define and shape concepts that make the Studio and its clients look good through maximum visual effect.

The Globe and Mail supports a culture in which employees can live their ideals, develop their abilities, creatively contribute to the success of the organization, and be recognized, appreciated and rewarded for doing so. If you are the best in your field, we'd like to hear from you.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and develop high-conversion landing pages for content-marketing campaigns - owning the full arc from rough wireframe sketches to pixel-perfect, high-fidelity execution. Translate campaign strategy into visually expressive HTML and CSS, making deliberate typographic, spatial, and motion decisions that serve both brand storytelling and conversion goals. Integrate completed pages into a CMS using code, and set up performance tracking to measure engagement, scroll depth, and conversion events.
  • Manage external collaborators when required, providing art direction and feedback.
  • Contribute to the visual ideation for client pitches. Provide examples, case studies, mockups and mood boards where appropriate.
  • Support the visual identity of Globe Content Studio, including updates to its website, alongside the Creative Lead, helping create a unique standout aesthetic.
  • Be on the forefront of new design trends, including the latest in generative AI. Be prepared to test and eventually use tools that propel design executions forward.
  • Create assets that showcase the Studio and its clients on social media and other off-platform distribution channels.
  • Contribute to conversations around the best formats for the Studio to use when telling specific stories. Have a good grasp of how to bring interactive formats and pages to life on and off platform, and be able to execute assets such as quizzes and polls.
  • Maintain exceptional creative and technical skills even while handling multiple projects at once.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary degree, university or college, related to the field of design.
  • Minimum three years of work experience.
  • Proficient in Figma and the ability to also occasionally work in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) as needed.
  • HTML, CSS expertise and basic JavaScript knowledge.
  • Ability to adapt to use any content management system as required.
  • Video editing and motion graphic design an asset.
  • Openness to testing generative AI tools with an eye on using in 'live' scenarios when deemed fit for use by the organization.
  • Ability and eagerness to learn new design techniques and technologies.
  • Comfort designing and posting material across social media.
  • Strong verbal and written skills are assets.
  • Team player with an independent streak.

SALARY: The base salary for this role ranges from $85,000 to $95,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate's level of experience, technical skills, and alignment with the role's requirements. Candidates who have been identified as meeting the role's requirements can expect to be near the midpoint of this range, while the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles. This role may also be eligible for The Globe's Annual Incentive Plan, which is based on a combination of company and individual performance.
