POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Globe and Mail is looking for an SEO-focused Audience Growth Editor to help us reach and grow new audiences by showcasing, optimizing and shaping Globe journalism on all platforms, including Google (search, Discover, News, AI mode and AI overviews), social media platforms with a focus on YouTube, TikTok, Reddit and LinkedIn, newsletters, and other spaces.

We're looking for a strong journalist who is well-versed in SEO best practices, isn't afraid of AI, JSON or HTML, and is familiar with industry tools like SEMrush and Newzdash. You know the search field is being transformed almost daily and are excited (and have a few ideas) about the possibilities this creates for journalism.

The Globe and Mail's Audience Growth team is a collaborative, tight-knit group of journalists that works across the newsroom to bring our stories to readers on many different platforms. We are constantly experimenting with format and storytelling approaches, and are looking for team members who are enthusiastic about the future of journalism, and The Globe's role in serving readers where they are.

This position will focus on establishing and executing on SEO best practices, including the creation, optimization and promotion of Globe journalism. This might also include scripts, on-camera and newsletter work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Optimize Globe journalism by anticipating, planning and employing SEO best practices for various editorial teams, to help meet monthly traffic targets from search, news aggregators, social, and email.
  • Communicate relevant researched search terms to the newsroom for both daily news and upcoming events.
  • Ensure articles and landing pages have the best possible headlines, sub-headlines and are optimized for search.
  • Train new staff on SEO best practices.
  • Monitor site analytics and use SEO tools and techniques to optimize site traffic, improve user experience and increase subscriptions.
  • Determine areas of potential coverage, readership trends and new opportunities using keyword research.
  • Work with The Globe's product team to ensure the technical aspects of our website are optimized for SEO.
  • Collaborate across departments to create and execute audience growth strategies for stories, with a focus on reach, traffic and platforms.
  • Work closely with platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, LinkedIn and more to ensure maximum visibility for our journalism across the online landscape, using the platforms' individual tools.
  • Develop and execute ideas for engaging our audience, using methods like reader callouts and surveys, comment round-ups, quizzes and community engagement.
  • Stay abreast of changes in SEO industry, including impact of AI and platform algorithms.
  • Experiment with new forms of journalism and promotion and monitor their success with Globe readership.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Solid news judgement and a flair for writing engaging, SEO-optimized headlines and stories.
  • An understanding of the potential around journalism and AI.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working in an SEO-specific or adjacent role.
  • Thrives in an environment of creativity and experimentation.
  • Excited about new ideas and using data to test, learn and transform.
  • Able to identify existing and potential audience for The Globe's journalism, iterating on what exists and developing new ideas based on what readers are looking for.
  • Able to translate metrics into smart audience decisions and work across the newsroom and broader organization with different levels of staff to develop and support best practices on search, platforms, story presentation and headlines.
  • Curious and constantly thinking about new ways to ensure stories reach readers.
  • Independent thinking and teamwork, with an ability to shift between the two, will be integral.
  • Experience building and growing an audience, including knowledge of audience data.
  • Experience working with Google's search algorithm and proficiency on off-platform sites will be an asset.

SALARY: This position is classified under Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
