Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Design, the Designer is responsible for developing design concepts of considerable complexity and prepares or directs the preparation of final design layouts. Responsible for the technical quality and accuracy of own work and work of other design staff assigned to projects.
Key Responsibilities
Under the technical direction of the lead engineer:
- Responsible for ensuring the proper application of engineering design to achieve project objectives.
- Assists with work scheduling, monitors progress and reports on emerging delays and problems.
- Develops engineering data for preliminary design concepts and prepares or directs the preparation of final design layouts and manufacturing documentation.
- Ensures that designs are correctly depicted and dimensionally correct. Arranges for the checking of designs and required approvals. Responsible for the technical quality and accuracy of the work of assigned projects.
- Monitors own work for adherence to approved drafting standards, corporate policies and procedures. Evaluates and suggests improvements to drafting methods and design. May assist with training and instruction of new and existing staff in drafting practices and techniques.
- Prepares design/drafting estimates and participates in project planning activities and progress meetings as required. Monitors project drafting hours with respect to overall objectives.
- Maintain liaison with purchasing, production and other groups to ensure that designs meet necessary requirements for manufacturing, shipping, installation and maintenance.
- May be required to assist with prototyping and assembly activities and advises on corrective action to resolve design problems.
- Performs other related duties appropriate to this level.
Qualifications
Normally Technologist Diploma (3 years) in mechanical, electrical or other appropriate technology plus 6-8 years directly related experience. Must be accomplished in the use of a computer aided design and drafting system (example Solidworks or similar 3D CAD system, AutoCAD or similar 2D CAD).
Skills and Competencies
- Must have demonstrated ability to understand and apply engineering instructions and to work from technical documents analyzing, resolving and interpreting complex design problems.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of design principles, techniques and an understanding of administrative practices.
- Must have demonstrated creative design ability and to be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Must have a fundamental knowledge of relevant company products, processes and procedures.
- Makes decisions within the scope of design and drafting objectives.
- Uses knowledge and experience to recommend solutions for technical problems and design methods.
- Recommends improvements to design and drafting standards and procedures and to drawing quality.
- Demonstrates technical judgment and effective control
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Provides technical direction and occasional project coordination for the work of other designers and draftspersons.
- May assist in training and instruction for new and existing staff.
Additional Requirements
- May be required to work some overtime in peak periods.
- May be required to work in Active area.
Training Required
Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker.
