Job Description

The Detail Design Discipline Lead is responsible for leading a Detail Design Team for a given field for the full 3D model development and extraction of complete Manufacturing Information (MI) to support production at VSY. The Discipline Lead will handle VSY team members and subcontractor's subject area team(s) to ensure that the 3D Model developed is complete, fully integrated and clash/error free.

The Discipline Lead is also responsible for ensuring the associated MI is generated in accordance with the shipyard's quality requirements. This role is also responsible for engaging in the 3D Model and MI Reviews. These responsibilities ensure that the goals and objectives of the project are accomplished within the prescribed plans, schedules, and budgets.

The role is defined within a matrix organization where the Discipline Lead reports to the Detail Design Area Lead and Detail Design Project Manager and has direct reports when assigned to projects.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you'll do

  • Responsible for providing organizational expertise and leadership to define program technical requirements, CAD modelling develop processes/standards, quality standards, and discipline design development strategies and/or plans.
  • Responsible for providing comprehensive team expertise by supporting the development and reviewing technical design proposals, scopes of work, budgets, and resources estimates.
  • Supports the Project Manager and planning department in the development of the discipline-based schedule and the integration with the overall master schedule
  • Leads and drives subject area design team to produce integrated 3D models and Manufacturing Information (MI), and supports programs through production, test, verification, and in-service support.
  • Cost, schedule, and quality responsibility for the discipline's scope execution within a project for both in-house resources as well as subcontracted resources
  • Drives collaboration and integration with relevant stakeholders (e.g., Functional Engineering, Detail Design Subcontractors, Planning, Procurement, and Production) to coordinate the scope execution for the assigned scope.
  • Responsible for overall discipline technical coordination and design integration for assigned scope. Liaison with Platform Integration Manager, Engineering Leads, Detail Design Area / Discipline Leads, and other relevant collaborators to resolve major and significant discipline design issues
  • Coordinates the discipline system review process and identifies the relevant stakeholders to be involved in the review process considering specific discipline requirements.
  • Monitors and identifies improvements concerning design working processes, tools, and training that can offer increased efficiency, responsiveness, and product quality.
  • Travel required for on-site support and management at subcontractors' offices during the detail design phase of the project

What you'll bring
  • Marine Engineering degree in Structure, Mechanical/Piping/HVAC, Electrical, Outfitting & Joinery, or equivalent required
  • 10 years of ship design experience. Experience leading and coordinating diverse multicultural design teams.
  • Strong discipline and technical knowledge
  • Knowledge of CAD software and document control systems. Cadmatic is an asset.
  • Familiarity with the National Shipbuilding Strategy program is an asset
  • Proven effective communication across a variety of cultures
  • Proven ability to work independently and/or in teams to develop solutions to sophisticated technical problems
  • Above average analytical skills to capture and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process
  • Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CAD software, and document control systems
  • Sophisticated technical knowledge and marine engineering skills - cross-discipline expertise with design, production, piping, structure, nesting and 3D models
  • Knowledge of financial accounting, purchasing and management systems including skills with MS Project, Primavera and IFS an asset
  • Above average organizational skills including the ability to maintain organization in a changing environment, multi-task and establish priorities
  • Solid understanding of Class requirements and international ship design standards
  • Availability and willingness to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the employer determines is vital or desirable to meet its business needs
  • Commit to a high standard of safety and able to align with all safety laws and all of the employer's safety policies and rules
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Exercise sound judgement and make decisions in a manner consistent with the crucial job functions and corporate philosophy

The estimated salary for this position is $108,000 - $132,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
