POSITION OVERVIEW

The Globe and Mail is seeking an ambitious editor to manage the Ottawa bureau and lead our coverage of national politics.

This is a role for a journalist who thrives on the energy of the political beat and who is excited to collaborate across the newsroom to cover it. Politics doesn't operate in a silo. Working closely with business, foreign and national bureaus to strategize coverage around key themes for our audience - from trade to energy to global affairs and more - is key.

The ideal candidate lives for the thrill of a scoop and knows how to turn a good tip into a story everyone else wishes they had. As Politics Editor, you'll be at the centre of our mission-driven journalism, driving a variety of coverage, from breaking news to enterprise reporting to profiles of Canada's most influential and interesting people. You understand how to motivate and support others to achieve their best, delivering work that is authoritative, insightful, and original.

Reporting to the National Editor and working with the Ottawa bureau chief, this is a management role based in Ottawa that requires strong editorial judgment and collaborative leadership. You'll work closely with editors, reporters, visual journalists, and others across the newsroom to create the exceptional journalism that defines The Globe.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assign daily and long-term politics coverage
  • Brainstorm ideas and angles for stories
  • Edit stories in a variety of formats
  • Directly manage a team of 5-10 reporters
  • Advance planning for elections and other major news events
  • Collaborate with reporters and editors across the newsroom

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 10 years working in news media, with at least three years of previous experience managing a team
  • Strong news judgment, with endless curiosity about what's happening around you
  • Strong editing and mentorship skills
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours

This is a management position based in our Ottawa bureau and requires at least three days a week in office.

APPLICATION: Please submit a cover letter with your resume.

SALARY: The base salary for this role ranges from $117,000 to $146,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate's level of experience, technical skills, and alignment with the role's requirements. Candidates who have been identified as meeting the role's requirements can expect to be near the midpoint of this range, while the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles. This role may also be eligible for The Globe's Annual Incentive Plan, which is based on a combination of company and individual performance.
