Hours Per Week: 35 hours per week
Status: Full-time

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the incumbent provides research support to library patrons both virtually (chat, SMS/text, phone, email) and in person and provides assistance / technical advice to library staff editing research guides online. This position troubleshoots, develops and maintains webpage infrastructure and content using relevant programming languages within specified guidelines. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing web content management including:
    • Creating, editing and maintaining department web presence, using a content management system
    • Debugging and troubleshooting website navigation, layout and design, and functionality using web coding language
    • Maintaining and updating web content to comply with accessibility standards (AODA) and Canada's Standard of Web Accessibility to meet WCAG 2.0 and emerging accessible tools and software
    • Designing and leading ongoing web user experience initiatives to coordinate and administer usability testing, analyse feedback, incorporate changes to department website and communicate results
    • Administering web analytics tools to collect and analyse web and usage data to recommend evidenced-based web updates
    • Assisting with the technical creation of videos and tutorials in support of department instruction and services
    • Utilizing Photoshop and Adobe Suite tools and video creating/editing software to produce visual and dynamic web content and learning tools
    • Documenting and updating web development processes and best practices for the department and offering guidance to staff engaged in web content development
  • Providing Information / Reference Services (face to face and virtually) including:
    • Delivering information and reference services to students and faculty across all academic program areas, online and in-person through a variety of platforms (email, chat functions, video chat)
    • Designing search strategies to support the Georgian community's information queries, facilitating reference interviews to broaden or narrow search criteria and retrieving appropriate resources from a variety of print and electronic information sources critical to the research needs of the client
    • Responding to client (student or faculty) research questions from other Ontario colleges through askON (a collaboration of Ontario college libraries that provides real-time, interactive chat)
    • Incorporating digital tools to engage and support student learning within the reference interaction/interview
    • Troubleshooting basic database issues and reporting instances of technical difficulties
  • Providing Library Orientation including:
    • Conducting library service workshops (in person and online) to academic program areas
    • Evaluating effectiveness of orientations and recommending enhancements and adjusting content in consultation with Faculty Librarian(s) and Operations Manager to improve student learning experience
    • Assisting in the development of tutorials and pathfinders in collaboration with Faculty Librarian(s)
  • Maintaining current awareness in the following:
    • Trends, standards and developments in the web development field
    • Accessible Legislative Web requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successfully completed a two-year postsecondary diploma in a relevant field of study that may include, but is not limited to Library and Information Technician, courses in web development preferred
  • A minimum of two years' experience in an academic learning environment performing duties to support the teaching, research, and learning of students and faculty; understanding the academic cycle and the corresponding information needs of the campus community
  • Experience with web design and familiar with content management systems, coding languages (e.g. HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, etc.) and development of online learning tools and resources
  • Advanced computer skills and experience with:
    • Web programming preferred
    • Subscription databases
    • LibGuides (or equivalent) application software
    • Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JavaScript, Web browser architecture, algorithms, search engine optimization, etc.
    • Social media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.)
    • Online tutorial and video development
    • Photoshop and Adobe Suite
    • Screen sharing and screen capture software
    • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
    • AODA and web related standards and guidelines
  • Proven communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated customer service experience with the ability to problem solve
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours (evening and weekends)
  • Experience in an academic library is an asset
  • Experience with a student information system (i.e. Banner) and/or a learning management system (i.e. Blackboard) is an asset
