Job Description

The Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) supports Vancouver Shipyards to provide in-depth expertise, advice and mentorship on complex HR issues, organizational effectiveness, leadership, performance, change management and employee relations. Based in North Vancouver, the HRBP will collaborate and work closely with operations across Vancouver Island, Delta and North Vancouver. The HRBP will also partner with the wider Human Resources Consulting Team on strategic projects across all of Seaspan's business units. The role will offer numerous opportunities for independent and collaborative work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.

What you'll do

  • Collaborates with the HR team to build and implement standard methodologies relating to attraction, retention and development of employees based on understanding of operational requirements, research and technical expertise.
  • Owns the investigation and resolution of complaints in assigned business units under our Respect in the Workplace Policy and Code of Conduct and Business Ethics.
  • Provides discipline recommendations to Employee Relations in respect to workplace disputes and grievances in assigned business units.
  • Supports Employee Relations during collective bargaining in assigned business units.
  • Acts as a single point of contact for managers and employees in assigned business units to deliver end-to-end Human Resources programs.
  • Collaborates with HR Centres of Excellence and Senior HR Business Partners to build and implement standard methodologies that drive employee attraction, retention and development.
  • Proactively supports managers with the interpretation and application of HR policies and programs, including performance management, career development, workforce planning, and compensation.
  • Drives workforce planning and forecasting at the business unit level to meet evolving strategic objectives.
  • Promotes a culture of inclusion with a focus on employee engagement, diversity, and inclusion programs.
  • Continuously drives improvements in processes and policies through external market trends, insight and internal standard methodology.
  • Responsible for case management of complex organizational issues, including Respect in the Workplace investigations and performance management matters.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you'll bring
  • A degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or equivalent.
  • CPHR designation or acquiring is considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 6 years work experience in a progressively responsible role as HR Business Partner, Senior Advisor, Consultant or Senior Generalist role in a complex unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of HR best practices in recruitment, compensation, performance management, succession planning, orientation and workforce planning.
  • Customer service orientation and results focused, can-do attitude.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to understand and balance Human Resources, business unit, Seaspan and employee needs and interests.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to optimally deal with multiple stakeholders and confidential/sensitive information.
  • Initiative, creativity and integrity.
  • Strategic outlook to support the objectives and goals for both the HR Department and the Business.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as required.
  • Excellent knowledge of federal and provincial legislation including the Canadian Human Rights Act, Employment Equity Act, Canada Labour Code, Employment Standards etc.

The estimated salary for this position is $90,000-$110,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package. Apply
