Job Description

Shape the Future of Decarbonization and Air Quality Strategy

As organizations face rapidly evolving climate expectations, this role positions you at the center of transformation. You will guide major companies through their most complex climate, decarbonization, and air quality challenges—helping them design future‑ready strategies, navigate regulatory shifts, and accelerate meaningful progress toward their sustainability goals. If you're an experienced climate or air quality professional ready to influence decision‑makers and drive real impact, this opportunity offers both depth and reach.

Why This Role Matters
ERM's sustainability and climate advisory team is expanding, and we are seeking a Principal Consultant, Climate Change, based in Toronto, ON, to help shape our climate change and air quality work across North America. You will work with global companies, utilities, data centers, financial institutions, and diverse industrial sectors—designing GHG inventories, building decarbonization pathways, leading TCFD analyses, and developing strategic air permitting and compliance programs. Your expertise will directly support clients in transitioning to lower‑carbon operations and navigating complex regulatory environments, all while helping advance clean energy, climate, and transportation policies.

What Your Impact Is

  • Serve as a technical leader on climate change, decarbonization, and air quality initiatives for Fortune 500 and privately held organizations.
  • Lead development of Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG inventories, emissions reconciliation, advanced technologies assessments, and abatement strategies.
  • Shape climate strategy, action plans, policy assessments, and modeling aligned with mandatory and voluntary regulatory drivers.
  • Manage strategic air permitting and compliance programs, including NSR, PSD, Title V, state-level regulations, and NESHAP MACT compliance.
  • Advise clients on complex technical and regulatory issues to maximize operational flexibility and meet expectations for scope, budget, schedule, and quality.
  • Build trusted long-term partnerships with senior clients, regulators, and external stakeholders.
  • Mentor and guide junior team members, fostering high-quality delivery and team engagement.
  • Support ERM's policy, account management, and business development teams to drive market growth and client success.

What You'll Bring
Required

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, environmental, or mechanical engineering, or a basic/applied science field (physics, chemistry, materials science, environmental science, earth sciences, etc.). Or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ (8–15 years preferred) of relevant experience in consultancy or the private sector.
  • Detailed understanding of EPA oil & gas emissions regulations (GHGRP, CAA Section 111) and state GHG requirements.
  • Experience developing GHG inventories (Scopes 1–3), including advanced technologies, emissions reconciliation, and industry frameworks.
  • Familiarity with natural gas certification programs, carbon footprinting, and product differentiation.
  • Experience developing operational emissions reduction targets and strategic decarbonization pathways.
  • Strong project management, analytical, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with executive-level stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality technical delivery.
  • Experience coaching or managing others, or contributing to team member development.
  • Enthusiasm, initiative, and the flexibility needed to work in a fast-growing practice.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in engineering or a related scientific field.
  • Experience serving as a line manager and providing structured professional development support.

Key Responsibilities
Managing Clients and Projects

  • Evaluate oil & gas, power, data center, chemical, and manufacturing processes to assess GHG emissions.
  • Lead climate-related projects including GHG inventory development (Scopes 1, 2, 3), emission reduction analysis, energy efficiency, renewable energy, decarbonized fuels assessments, and strategic policy design.
  • Develop climate strategies, action plans, and modeling aligned to regulatory and voluntary frameworks.
  • Manage and lead strategic air permits and compliance assurance programs for diverse industrial clients.
  • Conduct regulatory analyses of industrial operations; prepare major/minor source air permit applications under NSR, PSD, Title V, and state regulations; and support NESHAP MACT compliance.
  • Engage with local regulators to steward permit reviews and issuance.
  • Use strategic thinking to influence clients' decisions and outcomes.
  • Distill complex information into clear guidance for teams and clients.
  • Provide strong project management support across scoping, budget control, team coordination, and delivery.
  • Produce and review high-quality written deliverables and client communications.

Teamwork and Organization

  • Demonstrate strong people management skills, supporting, coaching, and celebrating team members across multiple deliverables.
  • Mentor and potentially supervise junior staff, ensuring high-quality planning and execution of technical work.
  • Build and cultivate relationships with senior clients, external stakeholders, and key opinion leaders.
  • Collaborate across ERM to bring integrated services to clients.
  • Strengthen ERM's ability to sell and deliver Climate Change and Air Quality solutions.

Business Development

  • Support ERM's policy team with insights relevant to clients.
