Job Description and Responsibilities
Supervise hourly employees and assist in preparing the team to operate safely while prioritizing customer needs. Work to meet and exceed daily processing goals, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the shredder and mobile equipment used to process yard materials. Train and monitor employees, including lead hands, operators, and laborers. Assist in the development and enforcement of the company's safety program.
Direct the activities of all yard and non-ferrous staff, including training, scheduling, assigning work, coaching, and performance management
Supervise equipment operators, maintenance personnel, torch cutters, scrap inspectors, warehouse personnel, and non-ferrous staff
Organize and oversee warehouse operations to ensure efficient workflow, material storage, housekeeping, and inventory accuracy
Establish production targets and monitor performance to achieve operational goals while maintaining quality and efficiency
Coach and mentor employees on production goals, quality expectations, safe work practices, and operational efficiencies
Maintain inventory accuracy and ensure proper material identification, segregation, and traceability throughout the production process
Coordinate shipments with the Scale House to ensure timely and accurate processing and movement of materials
Maximize freight utilization by ensuring trucks and railcars are loaded to capacity
Ensure product quality by maintaining proper material segregation and quality control standards to minimize contamination, prevent downgrades, and maximize material value and dollars per pound
Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, cost reduction, process optimization, and operational efficiencies
Establish and maintain comprehensive safety programs and procedures; facilitate safety meetings, organize required safety training, conduct daily safety observations, and enter data into Enablon
Ensure compliance with all Environmental, Health & Safety, and Company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
Recognize opportunities to improve equipment, people, and processes; prepare and submit recommendations with supporting justification for management approval
Create and monitor production metrics to achieve optimal operational efficiency and processing performance
Help meet and exceed daily processing goals while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the shredder and mobile equipment used to process yard material
Monitor and coordinate minor equipment repairs and report maintenance requirements as needed
Conduct and document daily safety observations
Ensure work areas, warehouses, and processing areas are clean, organized, and maintained in accordance with housekeeping standards
Submit vacation requests for approval and ensure employee timecards are accurately reviewed and recorded for payroll purposes
Requirements
Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
1-3 years of leadership roles ( military, lead hand, supervisor or management experience)
Valid driver's license is required
Experience working in a steel, manufacturing, recycling, or other industrial environment is considered an asset
Experience leading teams in a fast-paced production or warehouse environment is considered an asset
Knowledge of Heavy equipment and processing components is an asset
Ability to build and retain a strong team with strong planning and organizational skills
Strong English communication skills, ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing, and over mobile radio devices
Comfortable using computers on a daily basis
Ability to handle multiple priorities while efficiently performing quality work with minimal supervision
Proven leadership and communication skills
Knowledge and awareness of construction and industrial sites
Must wear required protective equipment
Must be willing to work varied shifts and start times, including weekends
Strong knowledge of non-ferrous metals, including copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, insulated wire, and other recyclable commodities
