Job Description and Responsibilities
Interpro Pipe + Steel has an immediate opening for a Lab Technician at our Calgary mill. This position is an integral part of the quality control process and in ensuring compliance and customer satisfaction. The Lab Technician prepares and tests samples for evaluation of product mechanical properties, prepares and examines samples requiring metallographic evaluation.
Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment
Prepare and perform tensile tests on heat treated pipe, as welded pipe, and upset tubing
Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment
Prepare and perform hardness tests on as welded pipe, quench and temper pipe, and as quenched pipe
Prepare and perform impact tests as required
Follow detailed testing procedures and record findings as per documented guidelines, communicate results with appropriate stakeholders.
Interpret weld quality based on metallographic results and communicate results to Mill LineAssist with maintenance, calibration and record keeping of all gauging equipment including the master gauge calibrations.
Prepare and investigate sonic indications and imperfections to communicate results to sonic operators
Determine parameter changes in Heat Treat based on mechanical properties and microstructures and communicate results
Maintain records and run files in a readily accessible form. Review and appropriately filing of inspection records.
Routine maintenance of lab equipment and housekeeping in lab area.
Requirements
Academic training in metallography, metallurgy, heat treating, or non-destructive testing (NDT), an asset
Experience working in quality within a manufacturing operations experience
Experience working with laboratory equipment in a controlled environment
Experience operating equipment and machinery (band saws, milling machines, etc.)
Willingness to support a 24/7 production schedule and overtime on short notice
Mechanical testing experience required
Strong data entry skills, alpha and numeric in multiple programs
Ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds and work an environment subject to fluctuations in heat, humidity, fumes, odors, dust and noise
Knowledge of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American Petroleum Institute (API) testing requirements, an asset
