Job Description

Weigh and carefully inspect materials brought in by customers, accurately compensating them for their items. Focus on ensuring that this process is carried out efficiently and safely while providing exceptional customer service throughout. Additionally, support the Office Administrator with various clerical tasks and contribute to other duties as assigned, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. Must have reliable transportation as the work site is not accessible by city transit.

Job Description and Responsibilities

  • Operate the scale system to weigh both peddler and commercial customers entering and exiting the yard, ensuring weights, commodities, and pricing are accurate

  • Operate the scale system to pay peddlers and commercial accounts for materials bought in a timely, professional manner

  • Communicate via handheld radio with yard operations to minimize yard congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow

  • Communicate yard rules with new customers and provide directions to scrap inspector/appropriate unloading areas

  • Ensure the accuracy of scale weights before allowing trucks to proceed

  • Maintain an organized scale house and ensure all paperwork is up to date and is filed properly

  • May have to operate a handheld radiation detector to check loads for radiation, and inspect and grade ferrous and nonferrous material

  • Field phone calls and direct phone calls to the appropriate person

  • Cut Scale Commodity checks

  • Look over for accuracy/get approval if needed

  • Create shipments documentation

  • Create packing slips & bill out rail cars

Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent

  • No experience necessary, but previous work experience in a manufacturing, production, or similar scrapyard environment is considered an asset

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Excellent customer service

  • Computer literacy

  • Ability to work independently

  • Confident working under pressure

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Ability to multitask and adapt in a high-paced environment
