Status: Part-Time (Regular)

THIS IS A LESS THAN 12 MONTH POSITION. Incumbents to this position will work mid August to mid May.

Located in Barrie and reporting to the Associate Dean, the incumbent to this position supports the Design, Visual Arts, and Computer Studies portfolio by providing technical support to students and faculty, primarily within the Woodshop and Sculpture studios. The incumbent demonstrates and monitors students' safe and efficient use of equipment in these studios. They are also responsible for the maintenance of the equipment, as well as procurement of supplies and other activities required to facilitate day-to-day operations in the Woodshop and Sculpture studios. As required, the incumbent may also provide support for other academic activities within the Design, Visual Arts, and Computer Studies portfolio, including but not limited to support for students and faculty in Printmaking, Painting, and the campus gallery. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrating and over-seeing safe use of various machines and equipment in the woodshop and sculpture studios, and ensures that health and safety procedures are followed
  • Assisting faculty in planning, organizing, preparing, and performing classroom demonstrations
  • Monitoring students working in the studios and labs (from health and safety perspective) ensures proper health and safety procedures and protocols are adhered to
  • Supporting students in selecting best practices, modeling, and reinforcing correct application of those practices
  • Troubleshoots and responds to students' questions in the lab/studio setting
  • Performing certain technical operations for students (e.g. table saw cuts)
  • Researching new materials, techniques, and technologies to anticipate needs, safety and provide recommendations to the coordinator and faculty. Maintains currency with the latest techniques in relation to art and design practice
  • Maintaining tools and equipment and keeps a log of studio and equipment maintenance
  • Cleaning and maintaining environment in woodshop and sculpture studios
  • Conducting a full tool and equipment inventory count twice yearly
  • Locking up tools, equipment, and studios at the end of each class and or work period
  • Purchasing equipment and supplies in consultation with faculty and program coordinator within the allotted budget parameters
  • Selling materials for course projects to students
  • Maintaining inventory of resale materials (purchased and sold to students) monthly
  • Utilizing the OneCard payment system for all material inventory sales to students
  • Reconciling credit card expenditures in consultation with the Academic Officer (AO)
  • Maintaining and updating the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) documents and Material Safety Datasheets relevant to Woodshop and Sculpture studios in consultation with faculty
  • Assisting with Joint Health and Safety (JHSC) inspections and follow-up on issues identified in these inspections
  • Coordinating Design Arts student and recruitment events (e.g., Scholarship Show, Grizzly's Days), guest artist facilitation, and support for campus gallery and/or assisting with support for other studios (e.g., Painting, Drawing, Printmaking)

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successfully completed a two-year postsecondary diploma in a field of study that may include, but is not limited Fine Arts with a speciality related to Woodworking and Sculpture
  • Two years' experience in the field of Fine Arts, including Woodworking and Sculpture. May include working for someone or working as a practicing artist
  • Practical knowledge and experience with operation of woodworking and sculpture equipment and machines as it applies to the creative/design process
  • Experience with demonstrating art-making techniques and mentoring students
  • Experience with purchasing and inventory management
  • Experience with health and safety
  • Health and Safety (knowledge of material hazards and PPE requirements for materials used in the studio and woodshop, emergency response and reporting for occupational injury), and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
  • Experience using common business software (Word, Excel, presentation software), and the ability to respond to email in a timely manner
  • Numeracy: the ability to calculate costs for the resale of materials, portion and weigh materials, balance and reconcile budget
  • Effective communication: (written, verbal and listening), interpersonal and customer service
  • Ability to make decisions that may be sensitive, confidential or require conflict resolution
  • Effective time management and the ability to prioritize and work independently to meet deadlines
  • Organizational and planning: for ordering materials and preparing art kits
  • Flexibility: the ability to adapt to a variety of classroom situations and work with diverse groups
  • Research new materials, techniques, and technologies to anticipate needs, safety and provide recommendations to the coordinator and faculty and maintain currency with the latest techniques in relation to art and design practice
