Job Description and Responsibilities
The responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: picking non-ferrous metals from a moving conveyor, cleaning around the mill, assisting shredder mechanics with general maintenance, feeding conveyors and other equipment, sorting, stacking, and moving materials throughout the yard. Additionally, the role involves preparing materials for loading and unloading, general cleanup of the yard, and cutting larger pieces of scrap steel using a cutting torch.
Responsible for handling of metal/scrap throughout the yard, and organizing and sorting various metals in the yard, and non-ferrous metals
Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs). Observe and follow all safety regulations
Wear PPE required at all times when in the yard
Cut scrap steel to the specified sizes assigned by quality control using a cutting torch, and various lifting and physical labor are involved
Keep equipment serviced by conducting routine maintenance and completing minor repairs
Load and unload materials, and inspect and grade non-ferrous material, as well as material sorting
General help in the mechanics shop and/or truck shop as needed
Perform other duties as they might be assigned
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, as part of a 24-hour operation
Requirements
Minimum education level – completion of High School or GED equivalent
No experience necessary, but previous work experience in a manufacturing, production, or similar scrapyard environment will be considered an asset
Able to meet the physical demands of the position, including standing, walking, sitting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, moderate to heavy lifting, and pushing and pulling for up to 12 hours a day
Strong communication skills- communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and over mobile radio devices
Strong work ethic – uses time efficiently, works safely, and ensures everyone around them is working safely
Strong attention to detail with close visual attention for sustained/long periods of times
Able to work in all types of weather – hot, dry summer conditions and cold, harsh winter conditions
Reliable transportation to and from work, as the work site is not accessible by transit
Safety-conscious and oriented, and able to work with minimal supervision
