POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Globe and Mail is hiring a deputy head of editing, a management role, to help lead our newsroom's editing team.

The Globe has a strong editing culture, with desks dedicated to substantive edits and copy edits of stories from across the newsroom, whether breaking news, enterprise journalism, columns, reviews, features, longform and investigations. As deputy head of editing, you will play a key role in shaping a wide range of stories in a variety of formats.

Reporting to the head of editing, this role works collaboratively with everyone from assigning, digital and visual editors to senior leaders. The ideal candidate loves the chase of breaking news and the thrill of a colleague landing a big scoop. You must be a clear communicator who knows how to coach others through tricky edits and provide constructive feedback. Creative problem solving on tight deadlines is a must, as well as thinking through how our workflows and strategies should evolve alongside audience habits.

This position is based in the Toronto newsroom and requires a minimum of three days a week in office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the head of editing to set the strategy and priorities for the team and how it works with the wider newsroom
  • Work with editors at all stages of the story handling process to ensure they are well edited for structure, clarity, tone, libel, accuracy and Globe style.
  • Work to elevate the quality of headlines and display copy to meet our audience's needs
  • Plan training and development for staff and mentor new editors
  • Manage resources and scheduling for a team of several dozen editors

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least five years experience working in a daily newsroom
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or management role
  • Previous experience in substantive editing of news and feature stories
  • Previous experience in digital strategy and what makes a story work across different platforms and formats
  • Solid news judgment
  • Collaborative and clear communicator

SALARY:

The base salary for this role ranges from $99,000 to $125,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate's level of experience, technical skills, and alignment with the role's requirements. Candidates who have been identified as meeting the role's requirements can expect to be near the midpoint of this range, while the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles. This role may also be eligible for The Globe's Annual Incentive Plan, which is based on a combination of company and individual performance.
