Hours Per Week: 35 hours per week
Status: Full-time

Located in Owen Sound and reporting to the Operations Manager, Libraries and Academic Success, the incumbent is responsible for offering online and in-person mathematical support for academic programs including foundational mathematical concepts, technical and applied math (algebra, trigonometry), health sciences (dosage calculation, statistics), and Marine Studies (spherical mathematics). The Math Technologist is also responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Math Centre and developing and presenting workshops to support faculty within the classroom. Operationally, the Technologist is responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, scheduling and providing functional guidance to tutors who deliver tutoring support in a fast-paced open learning centre environment. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Communicating, critically analyzing and assisting students in developing their understanding of complex mathematical principles, formulas and objectives
  • Reviewing correct principles, procedures or methods of mathematical equation(s) and providing the student with appropriate resources and materials for independent study and practice
  • Developing drills/practice questions for students
  • Liaising with program faculty to coordinate and facilitate classroom workshops that support assignments
  • Investigating and developing quality and equitable math support services that support all Georgian campuses
  • Participating in the development of a Georgian College math strategy that supports faculty teaching and student learning needs
  • Co-ordinating the day-to-day activities of the Math Centre including scheduling tutors, ensuring adequate tutor coverage in response to student demand, providing functional guidance to tutors by helping them problem solve student issues
  • Utilizing departments reporting system to track usage (number counts per day, week and semesters) in addition to actively seeking student feedback regarding the centre
  • Providing functional and technical guidance and support to part-time technologists
  • Liaising with faculty for tutor recommendations within program areas
  • Facilitating the updating and development or modification of centre operational documents and promotional materials aligned with the department
  • Marketing the Math Centre to students and faculty outlined in the department's communication strategy (example: internal communications, class visits, orientation booths, information days, open houses etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successfully completed a three-year postsecondary diploma/degree in mathematics education or another intensive discipline (Science or Engineering fields)
  • A minimum of five years' experience as a math tutor, preferably in an open learning centre environment
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, dosages, spherical math, physics and their applications
  • Knowledge of mathematical formulas and calculations specifically within Engineering, Health Sciences, Marine Studies and degree programs
  • CRLA certification Level II, equivalent tutoring experience (minimum of 25 hours) or Supplemental Instruction Certificate an asset
  • Excellent speaking and listening skills
  • Highly developed questioning and interviewing skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and demonstrating confidence and good judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to take responsibility and exercise initiative
  • Organizational, communication, assessment and team building skills
  • Experience mentoring students and providing functional guidance to student staff while demonstrating a strong commitment to student success
  • Experience creating training and development programs
